These claims are mostly based on vague coastlines and Chinese characters appearing near the Americas. In 2001, a Chinese lawyer named Liu Gang bought this map for $500 and argued it showed Chinese explorers reached the Americas before Columbus. Most scholars reject this, pointing out the map was based on European sources and includes known European mapping errors. It reflects 18th-century geography and imagination, not early Chinese discovery of the New World.
