This 12″×18″ desk mat features the 1763 Chinese Map of the World, known as the Complete Map of the Myriad Countries of the World. Created by Jesuit missionary Ferdinand Verbiest and printed in China, it blends Western cartography with a Chinese worldview and Confucian ideas. The map places China at the center, but what stands out today are claims that it proves ancient Chinese exploration of the Americas. These claims are mostly based on vague coastlines and Chinese characters appearing near the Americas. In 2001, a Chinese lawyer named Liu Gang bought this map for $500 and argued it showed Chinese explorers reached the Americas before Columbus. Most scholars reject this, pointing out the map was based on European sources and includes known European mapping errors. It reflects 18th-century geography and imagination, not early Chinese discovery of the New World.
